commercialroad-250.jpgWhen it comes to our straight brethren, the one thing even more frightening than marriage is that moment when he has to clean himself up, tidy up his language and meet the future in-laws for the first time.

In our world, it’s a little different.

I was well prepared to meet hubby’s family. From what he said, they essentially went through the same hell with him as my folks went through with me when I was a teenager coming out the first time. I figured that they would be fine since 15 years had gone by since he came out to them.

As expected, they were gems. Quite possibly the coolest and most wonderful in-laws a boy could have. I have come to love them like they are my own parents and I even refer to them as “Mum and Dad”.

But his friends are a whole different deal.

While Mum and Dad were at home living the kind of life that Mums and Dads live, hubby was out sowing his wild oats and smashing it with his friends. While Mum and Dad know him, his friends really know him. Amongst them are ex-partners, ex-trade, long-term mates and more recent connections. His life before we met was slightly more hedonistic than the Salamanca-Markets-On-Saturday-Howrah-Garden-Centre-On-Sunday life we live these days.

kitchenware-250.jpg These are the people he shared the biggest nights of his life with on Commercial Road. I’m the guy he buys azaleas with at Bunnings.

These boys, most of whom are still partying like it’s 1999, are heading to Tassie this weekend. And I am terrified!

Sure, I’ve known him for a while now, but some of these people have known him for over a decade. They know his past relationships. They know his past indiscretions. They know his past hopes and fears. And they have all the right in the world to sit in judgement of me as his partner now. After all, they’ve been around a lot longer than I have been.

Yet, when all is said and done, they are his friends and good friends only want what’s best for you.

Even if that’s a life where you colour co-ordinate your Tupperware with your red kettle and toaster.
