Transman Thomas Beatie, who made international headlines when he announced he was pregnant, has given birth to a baby girl.
The baby, who is reportedly “healthy and doing well”, was born on Sunday, June 29 at a hospital in Oregon, according to People magazine.
"The only thing different about me is that I can't breast feed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," the ‘world’s first pregnant man’ told the magazine.
Beatie, 34, began transitioning from female to male (F2M) a decade ago, and had undergone a full double mastectomy and hormone treatment. However, like the vast majority of F2M transgenders, he retained the reproductive organs of his birth.
Contrary to some reports, Beatie said the baby girl was not delivered by caesarian section.
Beatie stopped taking testosterone injections two years ago when he and wife Nancy, 46, who has undergone a hysterectomy, decided to have a child.
Unable to find a doctor to assist in conception, the couple self-inseminated using a veterinary syringe.
In April, Beatie told The Oprah Winfrey Show that had it not been for Nancy’s inability to conceive, he “would not be doing this”.
“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Beatie told Winfrey.
“I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”
Nonetheless, the couple faced many challenges in the process towards parenthood.
“Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs,” Beatie told The Advocate.
“Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender,” he said.
A first insemination attempt ended in an ectopic pregnancy, Beatie told The Advocate.
“When my brother found out about my loss, he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been?”
America’s ABC News quotes a source as saying the Beatie baby was “really cute, really pretty”.
The good news is the Beaties can now toast the birth of their baby girl with a brand new “gay” wine from France.
According to Decanter magazine, Domaine de Boyer has launched a sparkling rosé called Tendre Bulle Gay Vin. Tendre bulle translates as ‘tender bubbles’.
The label shows two heads in profile facing each other, with the words “Gay Vin” appearing underneath and the letters G and L on the capsule.
The launch follows the release in April of ‘Mundo Gay’, a Spanish red wine from Bodegas y Viñedos Robea.
