Ever dreamt you could go to Stonewall?
No, not just visiting the site of the infamous New York riot widely credited with sparking the gay liberation movement, but right there in the thick of it, smashing The Man with your handbag and kicking those corrupt cops in the keyster?
Now you can. An online flash game released as part of New York Pride celebrations takes you back in time to June 28, 1969 and zaps you into the gay melee of Christopher Street.
Designed by Eric Orner, the cartoonist who created The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green, and Jay Laird of Metaversal Studios, Stonewall Brawl is an easy-to-play Streets of Rage-style game with three levels and a cheeky attitude.
The game allows you to “stick it to the man using flaming kicks, head butts, martinis, and the anachronistic power of disco!”.
Its creators say it’s “a gay pride gift to everyone who’s tired of the hetero characters getting all the starring roles”.
It is said transgenders and drag queens were at the forefront of the real riots, and in the game you can choose to play as a blonde beehived drag queen of colour called George’A or a bathing suit beauty of indeterminate gender called Miss Terri.
But if trans ain’t your bag, honey, you can always play as bulldagger radicalesbian Thelma, or the buffed and flared Latino, Rainblo. There’s also Chuck, who may nor may not be a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence.
Watch out for the shop names too, which include Bagel Bum, Sum Yung Gai and Spitshine Shoes.
