Fans of the popular US TV soap, As the World Turns (ATWT), have launched a campaign to reignite the love lives of the show's gay couple, by "drowning" producers in a "sea of kisses".
Sweethearts Luke and Noah first locked lips last August. They kissed again a month later. But the devoted pair's on-screen passions have since vanished.
"Obviously, something behind the scenes has happened," says Roger Newcomb, moderator of a popular ATWT fan site and message board.
"Somebody's protesting, something negative. Somebody's kind of said, 'Keep the story around, but don't let them touch lips.'"
The show's sponsors, Proctor & Gamble, remain tight-lipped, neither confirming nor denying Newcomb's theory.
"We are telling Luke and Noah's story in the most authentic way we can, being respectful of all the people who watch the show," Procter & Gamble says in a written statement.
"We make decisions on how to tell our stories based on what we think is best creatively and for our diverse audience."
The kiss campaigners at lukeandnoah.com remain unsatisfied, launching a drive to send boxes of chocolates—Hershey's Kisses--to the CBS network along with letters of protest.
"The idea is that if the network and their main sponsor are drowned in a sea of kisses they'll realise there is nothing to be afraid of by treating the Nuke storyline in the same fashion as the heterosexual ones," says lukeandnoah.com.
"Either that or they'll slip into a diabetic coma and someone else can take over control of the show."
