The Launceston City Council has endorsed the Coming Out Proud Program and appointed Alderman Ivan Dean to the COPP region’s liaison committee.
COPP aims to help GLBTI Tasmanians come out and live in their communities with pride and dignity.
Convenor Julian Punch said council's decision was “very positive”.
“Community Liaison Committee members are looking forward to making a considerable contribution to the council's community plan especially in the area of gay friendly tourism, hospitality and pink immigration settlement opportunities.”
Punch said the committee intends to meet with Minister for Tourism Paula Wriedt “to examine opportunities provided by her department in the northern region in this endeavour”.
According to Punch, Wriedt established her gay friendly credentials by bringing Elton John to Launceston in 2007.
