Police in Peel Region, a sprawling suburb of more than 2 million people west of Toronto, have set up a special LGBT Hate Crime Hotline.
It is believed to be the first of its kind in North America.
“We are dedicated to providing prompt, fair and equitable services to everyone in our community, and know that this initiative will make it easier for people to come forward,” said Inspector Brian Cryderman, head of the area’s Diversity Relations Unit.
Some estimates put the area’s LGBT community at more than a quarter-million as more and more gays marry and leave Toronto for suburban life.
“The hotline for LGBT’s is an expression of the fact that the police extend assistance and protection to all people in our diverse community,” Cryderman said.
The announcement comes as Sydney’s mayoral candidates roll out their own plans to combat violence against GLBTI people in the Oxford Street precinct.
One candidate said licensed premises would have to formulate a “homophobia management plan”.
Another proposed a team of City Guardians, including a City Guardians Mobile Unit with CCTV cameras, and City Guardian Stations in night life hot spots.
