Sexual and gender diverse people in local and regional communities stand to benefit significantly from the Coming Out Proud Program (COPP) Trust’s $10,000 funding allocations for 2009, which were recently announced.

dollar.jpgThe COPP Trust has developed a substantial capital investment base to finance social wellbeing and enterprise initiatives designed to assist LGBT people in Tasmania’s regional communities to ‘come out with pride’, enabling them to live in their community with dignity as fully respected and participating members.

Representing self-determined regional philanthropy that provides support and protection for LGBTI people in local & regional communities, the Trust operates with funds generously donated by community members.

The COPP Trust has established five funding areas for 2009 and invites applications or matching funding from local self-determined organisations.

To support the COPP Community Liaison Committee & endorsing Councils to develop and implement a management plan to assist local sexual and gender diverse people, the following amounts have been allocated:

  • $2000 each to the Nth West Coast/West Coast and Greater Launceston/East Coast Communities ($4000 total)
  • $1000 each to the Greater Hobart (including Glenorchy and Clarence) Communities and the Kingborough/Huon Municipalities ($2000 total)

An additional $2000 has been awarded to the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard , supporting a promotional campaign for its telephone counselling services, and for the development of a manual detailing appropriate mainstream and special local/regional services for Tasmania’s  LGBTI communities.

Four regional small grants of $500 ($2000 total) have been allocated to LGBTI victims of hate crimes working with local police and the COPP Community Liaison Committees.  This is in line with the LGBTI Tasmanian Police Liaison Committee, which recently produced the posters and leaflets targeting LGBTI people experiencing hate crimes.

While no funding has yet been appropriated, the COPP Trust is raising a capital base to assist in the development of proposed LGBTI Suicide Prevention Grants. These will be developed in line with the recommendations of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Council Consultation Report due to be released in late January 2009.

Application for all grant areas can be made to the COPP State Steering Committee. Contact Julian Punch via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or your local COPP Chairpersons listed at www.comingoutproud.com
