Is it worth watching pornstars risk their health for your
fantasy? That’s the (rhetorical) question at the centre of Chi Chi LaRue’s new
video appeal: Safe Sex is Hot Sex.
The video features porn producer/director Chi Chi in and out of drag in a lavish production,
sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and the Los Angeles AIDS Project among others.
Safe Sex is Hot Sex’s message is that the men in the
industry are being put under pressure to perform unsafe sex, and it's partly our fault.
“I have a question," Chi Chi says. “After all the gay
community has been through, why are we putting people at risk for porn?”
Issues covered in the four and a half minute production
include separating the fantasy of porn from the health realities of the men who
perform in it and the increase in HIV+ men in the 15 to 24 age group.
Chi Chi’s to-camera appeal is intercut with male porn fantasies, but the take home message, trumpeted by one of the business's oldest pros, is real: "Wrap it up!"
