THE TING TINGS [COLUMBIA UK]
If Cyndi and Donna seem like granny mutton dressed as trannie lamb, then perhaps you’ll enjoy the indie dance pop of the UK’s The Ting Tings. This boy and girl duo are destined for huge things over the next couple of months, with this bristling new album punch-packed full of punk disco hits. The simple synth arrangements are accentuated with staccato percussion loops and cheeky singalong choruses.
There’s a decidedly “whatever” approach to their work that oozes Gen Y ‘tude and their too cool for art school commitment. But the songs are just too catchy to focus solely on their overt fabulousness. ‘That’s Not My Name’ is pure genius; a rough’n’ready pop hit, as structurally unpredictable as a Chinese school building and with as much ‘knock you off your feet’ impact. Hunt down this hot mess and you’ll be skipping like a fool.
