DUFFY [UMA]
Presenting as a more palatable, extra talented, and less unpredictable version of Amy Winehouse, Duffy is destined to be the first really big thing of 2008 (ex-secretary Leona Lewis is really late 2007, so she doesn’t count).
This little Welsh lass grew up on a diet of 60s soul and her directly derivative sounds are proof positive of this. She came runner-up in a TV singing show and used the notoriety to establish a potentially memorable career. Signed in a flash, with her original songs rush recorded, Rockferry is a gorgeous album of pained retro soul. One minute she’s Dusty, then Dionne, and then Lulu, all without batting a flash lash. If you’re into great songs that swing with classic faire, track down Duffy; then tell Guy Sebastian that this is how one does soul.
