MGMT [SONY BMG]
The marriage of two art-school Brooklyn hippy types called Vanwyngarden and Goldwasser from their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Yeasayer, has resulted in one splendiferous acid explosion of musical joy called MGMT (pronounced ‘management’).
With respectful nods to the late 60s psychedelic movement, the 70s British prog movement, post-punk fantasy and loads of sassy synth-pop, their album Oracular Spectacular is like the little sister of Polyphonic Spree but twice as easy on the eye. You see, these two boys prance around topless with hippy abandon, adorned in silken parachute pants, flowing fringed scarves and thick healthy hair. They’re at once earthy boy-men, yet also cheeky little fuckers screwing with your mind. MGMT is a journey through the rigours of corporate rock performed with a tongue planted firmly in a Generation Y, whisker-free cheek. You’ll love their theatricality, the lithe melodies, and the big city trickiness of their glam electro-pop tunes.
Too cool for art school.
