SERGIO MENDES [UMA]
It’s hard to believe that someone so ancient (Sergio is even older than Madonna!) could produce music still so vibrant, so hip and so contemporary; and manage to pull it off with the ease only a Latin master could muster. Perhaps it has something to do with the 39(ish) albums he’s recorded since 1961, and because this man is a true musician at heart. On Encanto, Mr Brazil enlists the musicianship of Herb Albert, Juanes, Ledisi, Natalie Cole and even his lovely wife, the original Brasil ‘66 songstress, Lani Hall.
Surprisingly, one of the immediate stand-outs is the Bacharach cover, ‘The Look of Love’, featuring the original vocals of his 1967 version, but bringing new sizzle with a rap by the fugtastic Fergie and production by will.i.am.
Encato is a wonderful introduction to samba-based bosa nova for the contemporary RnB fan.
