VARIOUS [SONY BMG]
And now I’ve piqued the interest of the old school nerds, how about a twin pack of classic swing tunes by a variety of stars and their corresponding starlets? From original versions of swing anthems like Mack the Knife’ (Louie Armstrong), ‘Papa Loves Mambo’ (Perry Como), ‘Night and Day’ (Dionne Warwick), ‘All of Me’ (Sarah Vaughan) and ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ (Doris Day) to contemporary versions by current stars, the longevity of the swing sound is explored and celebrated.
But it’s the updates that give the listener fresh joy, including Jamie Cullum on ‘…Kick Out of You’, Alison Moyet’s beautiful ‘That Ole Devil Called Love’, Eva Cassidy’s ‘Cheek to Cheek’, Vince Jones with his jazzy ‘Secret Love’ and Norah Jones selling it on ‘The Nearness of You’. However, my balloon bursts with Judy G on ‘Come Rain Come Shine’.
