Those of you in the Northern states might not believe this, while you're still sunning yourself and sipping your daiquiris well into July, but it gets cold in winter in Tassie.

Many of us in the beautiful but nippy southernmost state console ourselves from June to August by eating a ridiculous amount of chocolate or partaking in a sensible amount of James Boags beer. However, on June 21, the longest winter night of the year, there is another way for those in Hobart to seek comfort against the elements.

Lyn Reeves, Mary Jenkins, Anne Collins and Gina Mercer are four of Tasmania's most prominent poets, and they have banded to create something of a poetry supergroup with the poetry anthology, Seasoned with Honey.

On the evening of the Winter Solstice, they will be appearing together at the Magnolia Café in South Hobart to read from their anthology, which has been described as “honeyed, spicy and sometimes peppery”.

And there will be champagne.

So if you are in need of some spicy poetry (and champagne), on the longest, coldest of winter nights, in Australia's coldest city, head to arguably the coldest part of Hobart, and let poetry warm your soul.
